Building on the success of our 2023 programme, Social Investment Scotland (SIS) and Creative Scotland are thrilled to announce the return of CultureXcelerator. This programme is fully funded and offers a unique opportunity for creative and cultural social impact organisations across Scotland to access expert guidance tailored to their current needs.
What's in it for you?
As a participant, your organisation will be carefully matched with a dedicated SIS Associate who will provide up to four days of tailored coaching, and strategic and practical advice to support you in navigating your current challenges. Eligibility requires a minimum of two years of trading.
You will benefit from:
- Expert guidance: Our SIS Associates are subject experts and can help you and your organisation navigate complex challenges.
- Tailored support: Your SIS Associate will work closely with you to develop a customised plan that addresses your specific needs.
- Immediate impact: Our hands-on approach ensures that you can implement actions right away.
Last year, we successfully supported 11 organisations from the Shetland Islands to the Scottish Borders demonstrating the programme's effectiveness in enhancing the capabilities of Scottish cultural enterprises.
Take advantage of this opportunity to receive valuable strategic support.
Our 2023 cohort highlighted the impact of having fully funded, expert support from a dedicated associate. Hear what they said:

"The CultureXcelerator partnership had a significant impact on Govanhills Baths Community Trust. After an initial consultation, the support focused on preparing the organisation to be fit for purpose for its expanding operations. The programme highlighted the need for specific middle management roles to improve efficiency and sustainability. However, the most valuable aspect was the personalised marketing strategy developed by SIS Associate Jane Wilson."
Fatima Uygun, CEO at Govanhills Baths Community Trust

“My dedicated SIS Associate, Jane Bruce, was an important sounding board for me during a particularly challenging period for the organisation. She helped me to find a route through which was effective for both me and the organisation.”
Laura Simpson, Director at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop.

"The CultureXcelerator was a transformative experience for Edinburgh Art Festival. Our SIS Associate provided tailored one-to-one support, which was invaluable during a period of significant change. She provided honest feedback, challenged us to be our best, and helped us develop a stronger board, improve our fundraising practices, and enhance our leadership capabilities. I highly recommend this programme to any cultural organisation seeking to accelerate its growth and achieve its goals."
Kim McAleese, Director of EAF.
We try to make the application process as straightforward as possible. Applications for CultureXcelerator 2025 open on the 6th of February with applications due by the 7th of March.

The Appliction Process
All applications will be independently reviewed and potential organisations will be shortlisted.
You’ll then be invited to a 30-40 minute online application discussion with our Lead SIS Associate Marcella Boyle to explore your application.
At the end of the shortlist process, we’ll confirm which organisations will join the cohort. We’ll then recommend, based on our experience, which SIS Associate will work with you.
Matching Process
Depending on your needs, we may match you with a a second Associate (for example, a marketing and communications expert and a Board governance expert). Your four support days would then be split across these two Associates. We’ll carefully assess your needs and then make a recommendation to you.
Next, we will set up an initiation meeting (you and the SIS Associate) and the assignment (four days maximum) will then kick-off.
Based on our experience of cohort 1, typical assignments included:
- A review of Board governance including supporting the recruitment process for new Board Members
- Developing a strategic marketing and communications plan
- Development of a longer-term strategic plan, organisational learning and development (analysis and recommendations)
- Development of a social media strategy.

Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop
Here we examine the experience of Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop (ESW) with CultureXcelerator. Before joining the programme, ESW faced significant challenges, including the departure of a key senior staff member, the need to enhance existing business plans and broader operational concerns such as rising costs, and scaling sustainably, all whilst remaining focused on delivering impact in the community. The case study explores how the CultureXcelerator supported the ESW Director, Laura Simpson, to better navigate these issues during this challenging period.

Edinburgh Art Festival
Edinburgh Art Festival (EAF) delivers the UK's largest annual celebration of visual art and a year-round community engagement programme across the city.
In 2023, the organisation went through a period of significant transition. Under the leadership of new Director Kim McAleese, EAF sought to redefine its vision and mission and amend its business plan. To navigate this complex period, EAF partnered with CultureXcelerator. Through tailored support from SIS Associate Marcella Boyle, the organisation achieved several key outcomes, including board development, the adoption of a robust ethical fundraising policy and the identification of new potential funding sources.

Shetland Arts
This case study explores Shetland Arts' journey through the CultureXcelerator programme. As a multi-art form development organisation serving the Shetland community, Shetland Arts faced significant challenges including COVID-19 recovery, economic pressures, and community scrutiny.
Through one-to-one support from the CultureXcelerator programme, Shetland Arts gained critical, outside-in perspectives, refining its strategic focus and enhancing its ability to articulate social impact. Furthermore, introductions were made to subject matter experts within SIS’s wider associate programme around learning and development and social media support. While challenges persist, the CultreXcelerator played a pivotal role in strengthening the organisation's resilience and prospects.

Govanhill Baths Community Trust Case Study
In 2023, Govanhill Baths Community Trust (GBCT), a grassroots organisation in Glasgow faced significant challenges due to rapid growth and limited resources.
To address these challenges, GBCT joined CultureXcelerator. Through CultureXcelerator, GBCT received tailored, practical guidance in marketing and operations resulting in a strengthened marketing strategy, increased efficiency, and a more secure future. The partnership highlights the programme's effectiveness in empowering cultural organisations to address their unique challenges and make a lasting positive impact on their communities.

Starcatchers
Starcatchers is Scotland’s Arts and Early Years organisation. Like many other organisations in the Arts and Third Sectors currently, they faced challenges securing sustainable funding and navigating a complex operating environment.
To address these challenges and explore new strategic growth opportunities, Starcatchers participated in the CultureXcelerator programme. Through the programme, Judith Anderson, Head of Development & Operations at Starcatchers, worked closely with SIS Associate Jane Wilson to explore the concept of a Centre of Excellence. Despite limited time due to funding pressures, involvement in CultureXcelerator resulted in a clearer plan for this organisational development, enhanced leadership skills, and a solid foundation for future growth.
