One of six conversational sessions with inspiring social entrepreneurs leading through challenging times.
Social enterprises continue to make a measurable contribution to the economy . At SIS, we support these businesses and organisations and help them to continue to deliver their activity and thrive through our business support and investment.
A key priority is to ensure the sustainability of these impactful businesses especially through challenging times like the current cost of living crisis when the services and support they provide become stretched due to demand. The impact of rising costs, the wellbeing of staff and how this crisis will impact on their own organisation will ultimately sit on the shoulders of the leader as they strive to achieve solutions and the best possible outcomes. There will of course be some difficult decisions to be made, dealing with the unknown and situations as they arise on a more regular basis. It can be lonely and stressful time.
Leading through Challenging Times
This is the fourth of six sessions were we we'll be joined by an inspiring leader and social entrepreneur who is leading their business through the cost of living crisis and the impacts this is having to their organisation, their team and the impactful services they provide. They will share their experiences and provide insights into their strategic journey, their operational challenges and in some instances the opportunities this might present.
There will always be the inevitable endless to do list for the day to day operations of the business and the team. This sits alongside their strategic role looking forward and planning for the future sustainability of their organisation this role becomes key during a time of crisis.
Collaborations and Resourcefulness - How can organisations collaboratively work together to make the best use of the resources available? How do you lead in this space? Who do you work with and why? Do you stay true to your values? What are the benefits and do you ever need to compromise those values? What are the challenges and what are the opportunities? Our inspiring leader has brought together an amazing hub in the heart of the community working with other community groups, charities, businesses and local services. As one they can deliver so much more to reach so many more.

In this session we are delighted to be joined by Fiona Mackenzie, Founder, CentreStage based in Kilmarnock.
Fiona started her career as a teacher, spending 16 years as Principal Teacher of Music. In 2006, she left teaching to co-found CentreStage, a pioneering Ayrshire charity, building the original theatre space in Kilmarnock without public or grant funding.
After learning, through delivering music classes in HMP Kilmarnock, of the high numbers of prisoners – many of whom had been her ex-pupils – that had been excluded or part of the care system, the Centrestage vision became “ to create energetic, inclusive communities, with the arts at the heart”, allowing anyone to take part in creative and artistic experiences, enabling people of all backgrounds and ages to feel a sense of belonging and purpose and to aspire beyond their labels.
Fiona won the Association of Scottish Businesswomen award for Outstanding Contribution in 2014 and the ASB Woman of Inspiration Award for 2015. She was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International and is an Entrepreneurial Founder at the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship and Strathclyde Business School. In Dec 2019, Fiona was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters from Caledonian University.
