Welcome to the next instalment of our Circular Economy 360 Video Series featuring Nikos Chrysogelos, Manager of Welcommon Hostel in Athens, brought to you in partnership with Zero Waste Scotland. In this series SIS Associate Naomi Johnson speaks with inspiring leaders from around the world to find out their amazing experiences within the Circular Economy sector.

Throughout the Circular Economy 360 series we’ve been keen to show that taking steps towards Net Zero is not the reserve of environmental organisations. Whether you need to demonstrate environmental impact as part of contract submissions, funding bids or in demonstrating directly to your staff and customers the actions you are taking to reduce your environmental footprint, this is something all organisations do now need to do.

The Welcommon Hostel is run by the social cooperative, Anemos Ananeosis (Wind of Renewal) where in addition to offering hostel facilities it is also a centre for sustainable tourism, a place for social gathering, for innovation and for art. Welcommon unites green innovation and social integration where locals, migrants and refugees can come together.

As the key lead at the Welcommon Hostel, Nikos Chrysogelos talks to us about how environmental outcomes were incorporated into this seven-floor facility building in the centre of Athens. In this conversation with Nikos, we also touch on cost – taking time to look at energy bills and the potential savings that may be sought as a result of investment in alternative technology or simply switching to LED bulbs.

If energy usage and costs is a topic that you’re particularly interested in, you may also wish to watch this webinar recording featuring Diana Turbett, Shiskine Hall – improving energy efficiency in community owned buildings. Here, we look at how a community hall based on Arran improved its efficiency and reduced costs following an energy audit.

For more information on energy efficiency please visit Business Energy Scotland · Make Your Business Greener. You many also wish to contact Community Energy Scotland. Finally. Please note that the SIS Net Zero Transition Fund may also be able to help you make changes as you implement Net Zero practices within your organisation.
