Radio City Association promotes sustainability and energy self-sufficiency in the Garnock Valley and has set out to construct Scotland’s first subsidy free, 100% community-owned onshore wind turbine.

In 2023, SIS supported Radio City Association with a £1.6 million blended funding package as part of a larger £5 million investment. This package, which included £4 million from Thrive Renewables, was crucial for advancing the wind turbine project in a challenging environment, with higher energy prices, inflation, and grid constraints. Local Energy Scotland also contributed to the planning and design phases through the Scottish Government’s Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES).

The wind turbine, located just outside Kilbirnie, will have a capacity of 2.5 MW and is expected to generate approximately 7,839 MWh of clean electricity annually. This energy is sufficient to power 2,234 average UK homes and will reduce carbon emissions by 3,324 tonnes each year. Profits from the electricity sales will be reinvested into local community projects.

The turbine will secure more community benefits for local people than all the commercially-owned wind turbines visible in the area combined. We recommend the model to any community facing the same challenges.”
