Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop (ESW) is a unique, purpose-built hub supporting local artists and championing sculpture through community engagement.
This case study examines the experience of ESW with CultureXcelerator, a Social Investment Scotland (SIS) business support programme, ran in partnership with Creative Scotland, specifically designed to support cultural organisations through a dedicated network of expert associates. Before joining the programme, ESW faced significant challenges, including the departure of a key senior staff member, the need to enhance existing business plans and broader operational concerns such as rising costs, and scaling sustainably, all whilst remaining focused on delivering impact in the community. The case study explores how the CultureXcelerator supported the ESW Director, Laura Simpson, to better navigate these issues during this challenging period.

Overview
Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop is a cultural organisation dedicated to championing the creative art of sculpture through educational workshops, community outreach, and residencies at their purpose-built premises. It serves as a supportive environment for artists and plays a vital role in promoting and celebrating contemporary sculpture in Edinburgh. The organisation has been operating for over 30 years, with its current property opening in 2011. They generate revenue through their on-site café, studios and specialist courses open to the public.
Leading through challenging times
At the time of joining the programme, ESW faced significant challenges stemming from increased costs coupled with the departure of the Assistant Director to a phased retirement. The loss of an experienced confidant to Laura Simpson, ESW Director, also coincided with a busy fundraising period. This resulted in the need to enhance existing business plans and affected the workload significantly. Throughout Laura was conscious of the need to be present for her team whilst ensuring the organisation continued to meet its operational and community objectives.
The CultureXcelerator Partnership
Laura had not previously engaged with a professional coach when CultureXcelerator was suggested by Creative Scotland and committing to a business support programme at such a busy period for ESW was a big consideration. However, the Creative Scotland endorsement and access to the network of SIS Associates provided reassurance about the programme's relevance and value.
ESW was successfully accepted onto the programme and was matched with local executive coach Jane Bruce, who had experience in running medium-sized third-sector charities and community interest companies.
Throughout their sessions, Jane provided tailored support to address ESW's specific challenges, focusing on organisational issues, leadership development, and strategic planning. Firstly, Laura and Jane collaborated to identify and prioritise specific challenges within ESW. Laura came to consider Jane as a vital “sounding board” prompting her to reflect, analyse and develop her solutions. Additionally, drawing on her own professional experience, Jane provided Laura with practical examples that she could adapt to ESW's specific situation.
Jane also provided practical guidance on developing ESW's business plans. She reviewed drafts and analysed the provided materials. Together, they worked on refining the plan's structure, strategy, and implementation.
Impact and Outcomes
Participation in CultureXcelerator had a positive impact on ESW in several ways. ESW Director, Laura, felt more resilient and confident in her ability to navigate the multiple challenges facing the organisation. The programme provided a rare opportunity for Laura to take time for personal development strengthening core leadership skills, such as self-reflection and problem-solving.
At an operational level, ESW has strengthened its capacity to address organisational challenges. With the input of an independent, expert SIS Associate, the organisation was able to navigate a critical period whilst refining its strategic plans, demonstrating increased resilience and adaptability.
“My dedicated SIS Associate, Jane Bruce, was an important sounding board for me during a particularly challenging period for the organisation. She helped me find a route that was effective for both the organisation and me.”
Laura Simpson
Director of Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop
Our case study highlights the benefits of tailored executive coaching for cultural organisations facing economic and operational challenges. Importantly, by carving out time to participate in CultureXcelerator, ESW Director Laura Simpson was better placed as a leader to navigate the organisation through challenging times and emerge stronger.
Overall, the programme delivered by Social Investment Scotland played a pivotal role in helping Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop tackle a series of organisational issues during a critical period and build a stronger, more resilient organisation.
